1960's Gloucester club racer Bob Clifford has sent these great pictures in via current Bredon Hill racers Jo and Will Clague.
1968 Ross on Wye
Bob Clifford driving G101D which he shared with his mate Fred Aldridge who was the father of Stroud racer Nick Aldridge S5D and grandfather of 2007 British Junior Champ Scott Aldridge S27D.
The car had an E93A sidevalve engine in the unmodified class but would still reach 60mph in second gear.
Forest of Dean - Staunton Court - August 1968
Bob Clifford driving Bill Allsopp's supercharged Dello Ford. The car finished 3rd in class that day but in the opens it was involved in an accident and broke into 2 pieces! However it was rebuilt and was racing the following week.
The car was also driven by Barry Brooks and had a modified Ford 105E engine.
1965. Bob Clifford and Eddy Brock's first car. In the car is Bob and son Garry with Barb and Ray Brock
The then new shape 105E Anglia of G76D Don Lawrence gives chase to a special G26D
Mid 60's shot of some Gloucester League specials at Naase Lane, Quedgeley, Gloucester
1970 Gloucester & District presentation
Fred Aldridge, Bill Allsopp, Mike Fishpool, Bob Clifford, Norman Hupton. On the end of the middle row is future Touring Car mega star Andy Rouse who raced a special in the Gloucester club
Fred Aldridge and Bob Clifford present a prize to the 'Jalopy Queen 1969'. Do Gloucester still give out this trophy
Another picture sent in by Sallyann Hayden.
The picture was handed to her at the recent West Midland Open by a man (sorry no name - let us know if you read this!) who had taken it as a small boy.
It's another of George Thorpe SV77, circa 68-69, taken at Radford.Anybody know who the lads in the photo are?
The car must have been quite radical in its day with a pre crossflow engine mated to a beetle box 'formula ford' style. Twin SU carbs and no silencer finish it off. Also check out those tractor tyres! I'd be interested to know what those single ridge front tyres gripped like - if anyone remembers!
These amaxzing pictures were taken very recently (April 2009) by our old friend Granville Cottle who raced in the mid 80's in the Mid Glamorgan and Penhow clubs.
It must be the oldest Special in existence dating back to the 60's! Granville found it on top of a mountain 1500 feet above sea level. Granville says "Its a time capsule but if moved it would probably turn to dust. Some mecanicals would be usable but it would be real hard work to restore".
Does anyone know who raced it?
