In the 1980's the Jalopy racing tag was long gone and Autograss was going from strength to strength. Along with the increase in popularity came an increase in rules and officialdom. The Nationals was now run over 2 days with the Ladies still part of the same event. There was also the introduction of the Juniors class...
The cars were evolving too. In Class7 the pushrod powered Ford Pops had given way to a new wave of Rover V8 engined Mini Pickups such as North Shropshire's Bernie Edgeley and Cosworth twin cam powered Imps like that of Harrogate's Roger Newbould.
Tommy Mills' lightweight Mini engined special was as quick as anything else in its day and could even give Gerald Brace's BDH a run for it's money.
