This is the earliest publication we know of for Autograss (or Jalopy Racing as it was known back then). This copy is from 1971. It was written by Geoff Edmunds and featured all the clubs that were under the BJRA (British Jalopy Racing Association) banner. It had race reports, profiles and a For Sale section.
Jalopy Journal was the first real National magazine for Autograss (or Jalopy racing as it was more commonly known in the 70's). Each club was encouraged to send in reports of their latest news, and there were plenty of black and white photographs to look at. It ran for several years in the mid seventies.
We don't know a great deal about 'Autograss Journal' but it could well be Jalopy Journal with a slight name change to incorporate the sport's new, more professional name.
Short Circuit magazine was started in the late seventies by Hastings based journalist Paul Huggett. The magazine catered for lots of different formulas such as Hot Rods, Stock Cars and even Bangers. The Autograss fraternity had it's fair share of coverage but it was becoming more and more obvious that the sport was big enough to make its own magazine a viable proposition. A spin off magazine called National Grass Racer was produced by Paul Huggett, and Short Circuit carried on and is still produced today.
A spin off from Short Circuit, National Grass Racer was a very successful magazine edited by Paul Huggett that ran from the early 80's into the 90's. It was a mixture of race reports, driver profiles, letters pages and lots more besides. Publishing was taken over by the Birmingham based YBA group in the late 80's who still produce Short Circuit today. Unfortunately production of NGR came to an end around 1990.
Some typical articles from National Grass Racer. Left is part of the Nationals report from 1982 at MAP's Hanbury venue. Below left is a profile of Yorkshire Class 7 driver Dave 'Bumble' Fenwick, and below right a profile of the Border Counties Club.
Autograss Newsletter was produced by Forest of Dean's Eric Real in the early 80's and mainly catered for the Gloucester League although WASA and MAP were also regularly featured.
Incidentally, I can't remember seeing anyone at a Gloucester League meeting in the 80's who looked like the young lady on the cover...
Autograss Review was started in 1991 and filled the gap left by National Grass Racer as the sports only monthly publication. Penned by St Neots racer Jeffrey Parish it started off with mainly pictures and race reports from around the country as he toured the UK in his Riley Elf or Morris 1000. Over the years AR has grown in to the must read magazine for those wanting to keep up with everything Autograss. Jeffrey has an unrivaled knowledge of the sport and writes in an unbiased common sense manner. www.autograssreview.com
Supergrass is the magazine of the British Autograss Series and has been printed since the BAS started in 1996.
In glossy colour Supergrass brings a new level of proffesionalism to Autograss. The Editor is Tim Whittington who is otherwise probably best known as the premier journo for Rallycross throughout the 80's to the present day.
The magazine is well known for its sense of humour, as well as not being afraid to make comment on what it believes are the shortcomings of the sport which is quite refreshing, although I have to admit to not always agreeing with its views!
