Send us your old grasser pics by clicking this link!!
Sent in by Roger Gill. This is York's Jerry Teasdale racing at Long Marston with the NCTROL ( now York Autograss Club ) in the early 80's in his 875cc stiletto. Roger also sent in the below shot of Steve Holmes (now back with the Cwmdu club) fending off Allan Thomas and Jenny Thompson.
This picture was sent in by John Shorter and is of his Dad Tony, racing in 1977 with Mark Armitage. Apparently Tony used to race the car with the hot rods at Crewe on a Saturday night, then go racing at the local grass meeting on a Sunday.
This picture sent in by Mark 'Virgil' Booth of Ludlow's Eric Gittoes was only taken this summer but the car dates back some 34 years!
Sent in by Dave Vickers Jr this is a shot of his Dad Dave Snr racing his well known Class 2 Starlet. It was one of the quickest around before the FWD cars were introduced, even winning the MAP Open in 1998.
Thanks to Lewis Richards who has sent these absolute gems in. Lewis' dad Anthony Richards used to share a car (the C45 special pictured) with Douggie and Annette Brown who are his Uncle and Auntie. Lewis has also sent in pictures of Dave Ferniough's all conquring special R209. Lewis has even sent in an old Motoring News clipping from 1975 which makes great reading.
R209 Dave Ferniough was top specials man in the 70's
Hereford driver Phil Dyke with his supercharged V6 Ford special
This is Lewis' dad Anthony Richards (PAC19) racing in class 3 back in the early 80's with Noel James (PAC5).
Cool shot sent in by Brian Beattie from Northern Ireland of his brother Alan racing in his Class5 Mini.
Thanks to Andy Price for sending in this shot of Kevin Price in his Class3 Escort having fun with a similar Ludlow car
Andrew Price in his H036 Mini van
Thanks to Karen for sending this shot of Gareth Large in his customary sideways style at Stroud around 1994.
Thanks to Gerry Packer for sending this shot of his Pinto Class 7 Imp winning its first race at Weymouth 1982. Gerry has also sent some great shots that can be seen in the 70's and 80's pages.
A couple of shots of Isle of Wight racer Lee Zammit's very tidy Class 3 cars from 98 & 99.
Thanks to Maria Cornell who compiles the Border Counties website for sending these shots of Mike Hockley's Mini at the 1991 Isle of Wight Nationals. Click on the pictures to visit Border Counties website.
Thanks to David Weaving for sending in this great picture of Jim Corbett racing his Ford Pop in the late 60's
Sallyann Hayden has sent these great pictures of old Severn Valley cars from the 60's and 70's.
SV77 was driven by Sallyann's Grandparents George and Rene Thorpe in the 60's & 70's, Colin & Jane Shail went on to race with the number into the 80's(Jane was a National Champ too), and now Sallyann and Barry Hanks race with it to the present day which makes it 5 decades of SV77!
George Thorpe - Sallyann's Grandad who was a West Midland League founder member. Don Page's 100E on the trailer in the background.
September 1967 - George Thorpe on a test run at the quarry near Ledbury where he worked. George called this special 'Ethel'!
George Thorpe again at speed
Rene Thorpe - Sallyann's Grandma. As Sallyann pointed out she hasn't got any seat belts on, and she appears to be smoking a fag! Never mind - the ambulance crew are only a couple of feet away if there are any problems...
Rene Thorpe again having a battle with the Morris 1000 of BS7 Phil Goodenough
Severn Valley group photo taken for a bit of publicity in a local newspaper - left to right, Geof Dally, unknown x 2 (might be the "Evans boys") with SV4, Rene Thorpe, Jane Thorpe (now Shail), Colin Shail all with SV77, Leo Weaver with SV1 I think, and John Webber (Mark Webber's Dad) with SV81.
Thanks to long time Norton Radstock racer Paul Brooks for sending in this picture of his NR15 Class 2 Starlet circa 1995
A couple of great shots of Pennine racer Terry Allen in his first grass car - a mk2 Cortina 1600GT. Terry now races top level Class9 but I bet he had just as much fun with the 'tina'!
Thanks to Malcolm Chilvers for sending in these pictures of his Anglia from around 1976 when he raced with the Yafforth & District Car Grass Track Club who raced on the same road as Yorkshire Dales' Kiplin track.
Thanks to Aaron Mackenzie who has sent some great 70's and 80's pictures in. Aaron currently races in class 3 and he is uncle to Dan, Mike and Nicola Mackenzie who race in class 8 and juniors respectively. Dave mackenzie is their Grandad and Aaron's Dad. If thats not enough Aaron's brother Vernon should be out with a new class five next year!
This 70's snap is of Dave Mackenzie in an Anglia AA44[Anglian Autosport]. Behind is CA9 John Cousins and SN50 Martin 'Tinny' Button. The venue is Chipenham near Newmarket in Cambridgeshire.
A late 70's shot of Dave Mackenzie in 44 being chased by ST87 Andy Thompson at the Fastest Man on Grass meeting
In this group of pictures in the top left you can see some early 80s grassers lined up ready to race the Hot Rods at Peterborough. In the top right picture is one of Dave Mackenzies Escort's.
In the centre picture it's a rare anti-clockwise (wheelbender) race at Lincoln, Aaron Mackenzie on the outside of current National Hot Rodder Mike Thurley.
In the bottom shot its a very tidy special ST28 who Aaron believes might be the late Dave Hodgeson at Lincoln.
This group of pictures are from mid 80's Fastest Man on Grass meetings.   The top picture is of Aaron or Vernon Mackenzie ST44 followed by Phil 'Bimbo' Bryan in ST30.
The centre shot is of Dave 'Bumble' Fenwick's V8 mk3 Escort and Tiz le Mercier's Pinto powered version.
Bottom snap is Tiz in typical sideways pose.
Below are some more pictures from the collection of Aaron Mackenzie
This is A677A Bob Empson.   Bob's son Mark has contacted us to give a bit of history on his Dad's cars. This one is an ex rally car that he got from Castrol Oils' Mike Dockray and fitted it with a Shorrock supercharger. This car today would probably be worth a small fortune in period rally trim with it's history! The picture of the Anglia A677A is also Bob and it was fitted with a 1300 crossflow.
C999 Keith Newman who was to become a National Hot Rodder in the 80's.
C9 John Cousins, who was and still is Keith Newman's next door neighbour
SN69 Denny 'Karsey' Campbell racing with a cut down roof Mini. His son Butch still races with St Neots
SN42 John Fage

677 Bob Empson again in his Cortina
Aaron's Uncle Colin Croxon's Mini after a heavy roll at Bourn Airfield near Cambridge
Interval pram race. This is wrong on so many levels...
We have had an allegation from Mark Empson that the man in the back ground in overalls and curly hair is Richard Golding still racing today in CA120...
Colin Croxon's car AA141 again, this time driven by Aaron's Mum Barbara Mackenzie racing against Jenny Wing in C113.
AA44 Anglia of Dave Mackenzie with young Aaron keeping an eye on things
Thanks to Lee Zammitt for sending in these 80's photos from the Isle of Wight at their Bagwich Lane, Godshill and Horsebridge Hill, Newport tracks.
A couple of homebuilt specials
IW7 Roy Sheath had some very exotic machinery in the 80's.
Nice deseamed IW106 Mini.
Some Escorts do battle (top). One of Tim Barton's specials on the trailer (below)
Isle of Wight superstar 'Windy' Miller in his rapid Class 3 Toyota 1000 (above). IOW Class2 dice between an Escort and a Renault (below).
IW73 Lee Zammitt's early Datsun grasser in the pits (above). IW3 Fred Jupe's Rover V8 Special (below)
The Radford club supported the Isle of Wight Open for many years right up until IOW's untimely demise in 2001. Here are some pictures of Radford cars arriving for a mid 80's Open including the Class7 Renault 5 of Paul Waldron.
Keith Masterton's rapid IW64 Class 9 Special (above).
A shot of some West Midland League cars loading up on a lorry to go home after the Isle of Wight Open (below).
This next group of photos are from the collection of Simon Pallett.   Simon races Class 7 with the Sturton club but did Class 3 with mk2 Escorts for many years.
This picture is also from the Lincolnshire Showground in one of the heats with Bimbo leading, Ed Lees in second and Simon third.
This is a final on the Lincoln show ground in the late 80s. It's lead by Dave 'Webbo' Webster ST291 in a white Mass powered starlet, 2nd is Ted Shillitto in his V8 Sunbeam, third is Phil 'bimbo' Bryan, and Simon in 4th
These are a couple of shots of Simon racing against Ted Shilletto at a meeting at Scunthorpe
These pictures are again at the Lincoln show ground. In the left hand shot Simon leads from ST441 Aaron Mackenzie, who has also sent pictures in for Retrograsser.
From the same meeting, in this shot Judd Cave leads in his Pinto powered starlet, Ted Shillitto in second in his V8 Sunbeam and Russ Lyons in third in his Toyota twin cam 8 valve Starlet. Simon rates these guys very highly and said they were a pleasure to race against.
This picture is from a Nottingham meeting when they raced in Sherwood Forest. Simon says it was very undulating and was great fun to race on, but the local lads
always knew how get round faster than the visiting drivers.
These pictures are from the early 90s when Simon built a new class 3 and started to spend some money! This Escort had an all steel Cosworth Pinto engine and in the last shot he is racing it at Evesham.
Andy Hazeldine has sent in these 3 pictures of 2005 National class 4 champion Martin Hucknell in his early days of racing. Andy has been helping Martin for many years and even used to take him to meetings before he was able to drive on the road.
These 2 shots are of one of Martins very early cars. It is the ex Mick Raynor car which Mick sold when he took up Hovercraft racing. With it's cut down roof and squared off front it became illegal when the 'standard silhouette' rule came in to force
This was Martin's orange pickup from 1987 and is the same car that he won the 2005 Nationals with
Ray McCoy has sent in this great picture of an Evesham Ford Pop E93A from the early 70's. We are not sure of the driver but I'm sure someone out there can help us with a name.
Ray raced as R16D in Minis with the Radford club and has promised to send some more 70's pics in soon. Cheers Ray!
These next 4 pictures are from the lens of Paul Huggett who was the Editor of National Grass Racer which was the Autograss publication that everybody read in the 80's. Paul was one of the only people publicising the sport during that era way before Autograss Review and Supergrass were in print and is one of the main players that the sport is in debt to.
Paul believes this Kent 100E with an OHV engine was possibly a guy called Colin Spendley who raced in the same team as current racer Steve Carpenter's Dad Paul. Approx 1980
Bedstead style Specials - but long after the Ludlow cars had evolved - of Frank Willard from Crowborough Sussex. Mini powered.1979
John Turley #20   (father of current racer Steve) racing at Frittenden against an Imp, also about 1980
Bruce Frogbrook raced this very quick Stock Car style special to a lot of wins during 1986/7. Bruce owns a traction engine nowadays!
This early 70's picture is of Bristol South racer Steve Badman in his sidevalve 100E. Since Bristol South's demise Steve and his son Phillip race in the Stroud club as S111D with a Class2 Micra.
Thanks to Dave Goode for sending in this photo from the first ever specials race in the East Midlands on March 30th 1975 at Leicester's Launde Abbey track, featuring all 5 cars that made it to the meeting.
Left to right Will Hinton whose car is featured elsewhere on this site, Owen Naylor ~ 875 Imp power, Stuart Mensley in an 1800 superstox based machine, Dave Goode 1300 Ford power and Bryan North with 3 litre Ford V6.
Thanks to Paul Pearce PHD26 who has sent us these great pictures from his collection going back many years
This is Gerald Brace in his Cosworth BDH Special racing at the Devonshire Drive track against John Holmes. Gerald was very successfull in class8 winning the Nationals several times.
One of Pauls early Minis racing in the early seventies
A bit of action from a very early Nationals in the early seventies with Minis and Beetles battling together. Paul is in the white Mini with the red roof
Trophy winners at the PHD Presentation evening
One of Paul's early specials from around 1971 still with the tractor tyres that were banned in 1975.
Yes, this is an E-Type Jag raced by Scarborough's John Briggs in the mid-seventies.
Paul collects his first place trophy at the 1979 Nationals at Wetherby, Yorkshire from actor Bill Maynard alias Selwyn Froggit, The Gaffer, Greengrass etc...
Some more pictures from the collection of Pennine Class 9 ace Terry Allen.
Jeff Gutteridge at Henham Raceway in 1985.
Brian 'the cat' Taylor and Bob Allen
This exellent shot is of Terry leading Geoff Berrisford at Nottingham. GB's twin engined car was put in Class 9 due to it's cc's being under 2065.
More pictures from Radford driver Ray McCoy
Sent in by Lynn Powell, this is Lynn himself on his way to winning the 1988 Class 8 Nationals in his ex Gerald Brace car powered by a 1300 BDH.
Lynn also used the same chassis when he ran it as a Class 9 with this normally aspirated 2 litre Cosworth YB.
Here are some pictures from the lens of Tim Jones who races with the Hereford club as H9. Tim took quite a few pictures before starting racing himself. Cheers Tim!
Many thanks to Radford Class7 racer Ian Craske who has sent these pictures of a Hereford meeting at Withington around 1978.
This picture shows the late Ray Swain on his rostrum at North Shropshire's Black Park track at Whitchurch.
Here are a few familiar faces from the North Shrophire Club in the late seventies. From left to right Ray Edge (NS411), Chris Smith (Ex North Shropshire Chairman and NASA Chairman), Alan ?, Edna Owen (NS151 & NS152), Geoff Lowe, Henry Harding (NS151 & NS152), and Rob McDermott 411 Mechanic.
This picture from a late seventies North Wales meeting has been sent in by Glyn Law and is of the late Ian Law in his class 6 mini. It was powered by a short stroke 1300 built by Bob Jones (B&J engines). Also in the picture is Rick Steele who has been a regular racer over the years at North Shropshire. Glyn says Ian was always the bridesmaid at the Nationals, always making the final with several 2nd places.
