Hi, you have a picture of S13D in the 1960's section, someone has suggested in another section that it was called "the Lizard" this is not true as it was called "The Grasshopper" Richard Davis.

Nov 18 2008 12:40 am
hi, This is Richard Davis son of Gil Davis who used to drive B9H and B10H with the late Ron Grainger back in the late 60's and through the 70's. Rons son Andrew drove very successfully in the 90's. I have just stumbled on your site and i cannot stop looking at it. All through my teenage years our household was all about Jalopy racing. Dad would buy a Ford POP during the week weld some scaffold tubes together for the roll cage,we all used to paint it yellow and race it on the sunday sometimes with the paint still wet.In the early years it was the ability of the drivers who made the cars go faster than an opponent not how much money you had to spend on an engine. Does anyone out there remember when the TV channel ATV came and shot film of the racing at a meeting in Evesham when Dad was asked to roll a car with a camera straped in the back. Thank you for compiling such a supurb site. Is there any else who thinks like me that this was PROPER RACING.

Hello,

As some of you may know, I am a relative "newcomer" to Autograss car racing, being a member of Leewood for 4 years to date.

However, I am not a newcomer to short circuit motor sport, and can recall many cars from various oval mayhem with relish.

Although car construction has "progressed" due to inovations and "H&S", I get a great satisfaction in seeing the weird and wonderful creations of the pioneers of this great sport and wish the clock could be turned back again to enjoy the sight (and sounds!) of those wonderful men and ladies in their racing machines.

Pity we can't have a "retro" class for a bit of fun at club meetings.

See you around,
GED REEK (LEEWOOD P.R.O.)

All I can say is thank God for the Dodwells chip wagon at MAP meetings in the 80's/90's/to date? The curry sauce was "divine". Definitely a step up from "grass sandwiches!"

My Mum (Gwen) has moved on to Genealogy so I decided to do a search for Jalopy racing for my Dad. Mr Geoff Dalley SV80 one of the founder members of Severn Valley. I remember the first meeting 1965 - my brother Les was in the carrycot. Only Straw bales and a few tyres for protection then!! Really enjoyed looking at the old pics. My dad had many a battle with Don Jenkins and Plumber etc etc.Terry Brown helped Dad out when we migrated to Tenby - Those were the days. Hope you get some more old pics - brilliant website.
All the Radford boys - too much nostalgia.

What a superb site. I have photographs from the 70's taken by my late father, Charles Price (A Border Counties founding member and commitee member of WML when the nationals were held at Radford Hanbury Track in the mid /late 70's). Some of the photographs are purely Border Counties (pre NASA) when he had a 'special'(which he owned and built with the help of Brian 'Chap' Thomas in 1970/1 but interestingly did not drive it). He then took up photography which he said was cheaper!!!!.I have somewhere, photographs of the Roy Millington 'monocoque' prior to it turning a wheel in anger and a Rover V8 engine on a transverse austin / morris 1800 gearbox used by Trev Stead together with other action photos. I must find the time to sort out and put on the site. Regards, Michael Price

Great site. My dads mate used to race in the 80's and have many good memories even though i was only young. Would love to see some pictures of him on here if anyone has got any. His name was Alan Mellor and raced at York (No 15) in class 5. Keep up the good work. Richard Brook

Oct 20 2006 01:48 pm
Ian, the photo with S36D in in 70's section from jalopy journal was indeed Jennie Thompson.   I was a lot younger then !!   I hope everyone liked the overalls and the super smart helmet!   It had cork inside and bits of cork would continually fall like snow while you were racing.   Ladies in modified saloons had to work hard for a win as there were only two classes, unmodified and modified and we had the equivalent of eight, nine and ten specials in with us. Scary stuff!!

GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU JENNIE! THERES ANOTHER PICTURE OF YOU ON THE DAVE BENNETT PAGE TOO. IAN.
